Soon 'chocolate'became a fashionable drink enjoyed by the rich in Spain. ã An Italian traveller, Francesco Carletti , who broke break the Spanishmonopoly visited Central America and seen how the Indians prepared thecocoa beans and how they made the drink, and by 1606 chocolate was wellestablished in Italy.   Drinking Chocolate The secret of chocolate was taken to France in 1615,when Anne, daughter of Philip II of Spain, married KingLouis XIII of France.The French court enthusiastically adopted this newexotic drink, which was considered to have medicinal benefitsas well as being a nourishing food.Gradually the custom of drinking chocolate spreadacross Europe, reaching England in the 1650s.  First Chocolate For Eating  Up until this point all chocolate recipes were based onplain chocolate .It was an English doctor, Sir Hans Sloane, who - aftertravelling in South America - focused on cocoa and foodvalues, bringing a milk chocolate recipe back to England.The first oriinal Cadbur Milk Chocolate was reared to    Entry of Cadbury familyJohn Cadbury opened a grocer ’ s shop in Bull Street, Birmingham in 1824. Hesold tea and coffee, but experimented with cocoa and drinking chocolate too.By 1831 John Cadbury ’ s cocoa and drinking chocolate got more and morepopular. So he rented a small factory in Crooked Lane not far from his shop and becamea 'manufacturer of drinking chocolate and cocoa'. It was the start of Cadbury as we knowit today.A price list from 1842 shows that John Cadbury sold eleven sorts of cocoa, andsixteen different lines of drinking chocolate  –  some as a pressed block, some as apowder.John Cadbury introduced a solid chocolate in 1849  –  but it wouldn ’ t have beenlike the chocolate we know today!In 1866 John ’ s son George brought back a cocoa press from Holland. It hadbeen made by Coenradd Johannes van Houten, a manufacturer who ’ d been looking fora way of reducing cocoa ’ s high fat content with some of the cocoa butter removed andbecame much tastier. Flour was no longer needed, and Cadbury launched a newproduct ‘ Cocoa Essence ’ , advertised as ‘ Absolutely pure, therefore Best ’ .
